Permitless open and concealed carry for 21+ eligible adults since 2019-07-01 (SB 150). A provisional Concealed Deadly Weapons License (CDWL) for 18-20 year olds was added in 2026. Optional CDWL available for reciprocity and NICS bypass.
Vehicle carry
Loaded handgun may be carried in a private vehicle without a permit by qualifying adults 21+. No statutory duty to inform on traffic stops.

Self-defense law
- Castle doctrine: Kentucky recognizes castle doctrine — no duty to retreat in your home (and typically vehicle/workplace).
- Stand your ground: Kentucky has a stand-your-ground law — no duty to retreat in any place you are lawfully present, when meeting the use-of-force criteria.
- Duty to inform on traffic stops: Not required by statute.
Recent law changes
- 2026-01-01 — Provisional CDWL for 18-20 year olds. Kentucky added a provisional Concealed Deadly Weapons License tier for 18-20 year olds, becoming the 26th state to allow young-adult concealed carry under license. Constitutional carry remains 21+.
- 2019-07-01 — Constitutional carry — SB 150. Kentucky became a permitless-carry state for qualifying adults 21+. CDWL preserved for reciprocity (~38 states recognize KY's permit). Source →
